Copilot upgrade for .NET
An MCP (Model Context Protocol) server that provides AI-powered tools for upgrading and modernizing .NET applications. This server, combined with our upgrade custom agent, enables GitHub Copilot to analyze your .NET projects and help migrate them to newer versions of .NET.
Getting Started
Option 1: VS Code Extension
The MCP server is already included in our VS Code extension. Simply install the extension and start using Copilot to modernize your .NET applications.
Option 2: GitHub Copilot CLI
For GitHub Copilot CLI, the upgrade agent is distributed as a Copilot CLI plugin — the agent prompt, skills, and MCP server configuration are bundled together. Install the upgrade plugin and invoke the agent with the /agent command:
/agent upgrade
Note: If your repository has a
global.jsonthat pins the SDK version to a version before .NET 10, follow the steps in the Troubleshooting section below.
To configure the MCP server directly instead of using the plugin, see Option 3 below.
Option 3: Manual MCP Configuration
If you want to configure the MCP server manually in your MCP client, add it to your MCP configuration:
{
"mcpServers": {
"Upgrade": {
"command": "dnx",
"args": [
"Microsoft.GitHubCopilot.Upgrade.Mcp",
"--yes",
"--prerelease"
]
}
}
}
Troubleshooting
global.json SDK Version
If your repository contains a global.json file that pins the SDK version to a version before .NET 10, dnx will fail to execute from within that repository's directory.
This issue affects the Copilot CLI experience. The VS Code extension is unaffected.
Workaround: Add or update the rollForward property in your global.json to allow rolling forward to a newer major version. The example below shows the required property; you do not need to modify your existing version value:
{
"sdk": {
"version": "8.0.100",
"rollForward": "latestMajor"
}
}
This modification has minimal impact on your project as the upgrade process will apply this change during its initial steps. Setting rollForward to latestMajor allows the .NET SDK to use the latest installed major version when the pinned version is not available, enabling the MCP server to launch correctly.
Requirements
- .NET 10.0 SDK or later
- GitHub Copilot CLI or VS Code with GitHub Copilot
Telemetry
This MCP server collects telemetry. For more information, see the Microsoft Privacy Statement.
Telemetry Configuration
Telemetry collection is on by default.
To opt out, set the environment variable APPMOD_DISABLE_TELEMETRY to true in the MCP server configuration:
{
"mcpServers": {
"Upgrade": {
"command": "dnx",
"args": [
"Microsoft.GitHubCopilot.Upgrade.Mcp",
"--yes",
"--prerelease"
],
"env": {
"APPMOD_DISABLE_TELEMETRY": "true"
}
}
}
Adoption Assessment
A verified publisher signal is available. Assess fit from the package's supported frameworks, license and dependency graph rather than popularity alone.
