README

Copilot modernization for .NET

An MCP (Model Context Protocol) server that provides AI-powered tools for upgrading and modernizing .NET applications. This server, combined with our modernization custom agent, enables GitHub Copilot to analyze your .NET projects and help migrate them to newer versions of .NET.

Getting Started

Option 1: VS Code Extension

The MCP server is already included in our VS Code extension. Simply install the extension and start using Copilot to modernize your .NET applications.

Option 2: GitHub Copilot CLI

To use with GitHub Copilot CLI, install the agent using dnx:

dnx Microsoft.GitHubCopilot.Modernization.Mcp --yes --prerelease -- install-agent

This installs a modernization agent to your repository's .github/agents folder.

Note: If your repository has a global.json that pins the SDK version to a version before .NET 10, follow the steps in the Troubleshooting section below before executing the above command.

Use the --global flag to install to your user profile (~/.copilot/agents) instead:

dnx Microsoft.GitHubCopilot.Modernization.Mcp --yes --prerelease -- install-agent --global

Once installed, you can invoke the agent in Copilot CLI using the /agent command:

/agent modernization

Option 3: Manual MCP Configuration

If you want to configure the MCP server manually in your MCP client, add it to your MCP configuration:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "Modernization": {
      "command": "dnx",
      "args": [
        "Microsoft.GitHubCopilot.Modernization.Mcp",
        "--yes",
        "--prerelease"
      ]
    }
  }
}

Troubleshooting

global.json SDK Version

If your repository contains a global.json file that pins the SDK version to a version before .NET 10, dnx will fail to execute from within that repository's directory.

This issue affects the Copilot CLI experience. The VS Code extension is unaffected.

Workaround: Add or update the rollForward property in your global.json to allow rolling forward to a newer major version. The example below shows the required property; you do not need to modify your existing version value:

{
  "sdk": {
    "version": "8.0.100",
    "rollForward": "latestMajor"
  }
}

This modification has minimal impact on your project as the upgrade process will apply this change during its initial steps. Setting rollForward to latestMajor allows the .NET SDK to use the latest installed major version when the pinned version is not available, enabling the install-agent command to complete and the MCP server to launch correctly.

Requirements

  • .NET 10.0 SDK or later
  • GitHub Copilot CLI or VS Code with GitHub Copilot

Telemetry

This MCP server collects telemetry. For more information, see the Microsoft Privacy Statement.

Telemetry Configuration

Telemetry collection is on by default.

To opt out, set the environment variable APPMOD_DISABLE_TELEMETRY to true in the MCP server configuration:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "Modernization": {
      "command": "dnx",
      "args": [
        "Microsoft.GitHubCopilot.Modernization.Mcp",
        "--yes",
        "--prerelease"
      ],
      "env": {
        "APPMOD_DISABLE_TELEMETRY": "true"
      }
    }
  }

Changes from Previous Version

No structural changes between v1.0.1102-preview1 and v1.0.1119-preview1.

Adoption Assessment

A verified publisher signal is available. Assess fit from the package's supported frameworks, license and dependency graph rather than popularity alone.

This version is marked prerelease. Validate its API and upgrade path before production use.No SPDX license expression is published. Review the license text and your organisation's policy before redistribution.No target framework metadata is available. Confirm compatibility in a representative project before standardising on this package.
