AI-powered Extensions for DevExpress WPF Report Designer

The DevExpress.AIIntegration.WPF.Reporting package implements AI-powered extensions for DevExpress WPF Report Designer. Included extensions allow users to create, modify, and localize reports using natural language commands.

Key Features

  • "Prompt-to-Report" functionality - users can create a report layout by simply specifying a report description in natural language.
  • Modify Reports - users can chat with an AI Assistant to make adjustments to your report layout. This functionality is available in applications that target .NET 8+.
  • AI-generated Test Data - an AI assistant can generate test data so that users can preview reports without connecting to a live data source.
  • Localize Reports - users can press "Localize with AI" in the Localization Editor to translate all localizable property values to the selected language.
  • "Prompt-to-Expression" functionality - users can create valid expressions by simply specifying their descriptions in natural language.

Examples

  1. In a WPF application with the ReportDesigner component, install the DevExpress AI Integration package:

    dotnet add package DevExpress.AIIntegration.WPF.Reporting

  2. Install packages required for your preferred AI service. See supported AI services for additional information.

  3. Register your AI service at the application startup:

    using DevExpress.AIIntegration;
    using DevExpress.Xpf.Core;
    using Azure.AI.OpenAI;
    using Microsoft.Extensions.AI;
    using System;
    using System.ClientModel;
    using System.Windows;

    namespace DXReportsAILocalization {
        public partial class App : Application {
            static App() {
                CompatibilitySettings.UseLightweightThemes = true;
                var container = AIExtensionsContainerDesktop.Default;

                IChatClient chatClient = new AzureOpenAIClient(AzureOpenAIEndpoint, AzureOpenAIKey)
                    .GetChatClient(ModelId).AsIChatClient();

                container.RegisterChatClient(chatClient);
            }

            private static Uri AzureOpenAIEndpoint = new Uri("YOUR_AZURE_OPENAI_END_POINT");
            private static ApiKeyCredential AzureOpenAIKey = new ApiKeyCredential("YOUR_OPENAI_API_KEY");
            static string ModelId = "YOUR_MODEL_NAME"; // For example, "gpt-5.4".
        }
    }

  4. Attach the Prompt-to-Report behavior in XAML or in code-behind.

    XAML:

     ```xaml
     xmlns:dxrud="http://schemas.devexpress.com/winfx/2008/xaml/reports/userdesigner"
     xmlns:dxai="http://schemas.devexpress.com/winfx/2008/xaml/ai"
     xmlns:dxmvvm="http://schemas.devexpress.com/winfx/2008/xaml/mvvm"
     ...
     <dxrud:ReportDesigner x:Name="designer">
         <dxmvvm:Interaction.Behaviors>
             <dxai:ReportPromptToReportBehavior/>
         </dxmvvm:Interaction.Behaviors>
     </dxrud:ReportDesigner>
     ```

    Code-Behind:

     ```csharp
     using DevExpress.AIIntegration.Wpf.Reporting;
     using DevExpress.Mvvm.UI.Interactivity;
     public partial class MainWindow : Window {
         public MainWindow() {
             InitializeComponent();
             ReportPromptToReportBehavior reportBehavior = new ReportPromptToReportBehavior();
             Interaction.GetBehaviors(designer).Add(reportBehavior);
         }
     }
     ```
