AI-powered Extensions for DevExpress WinForms Report Designer

The DevExpress.AIIntegration.WinForms.Reporting package provides AI-powered extensions for the DevExpress WinForms Report Designer. These extensions allow users to create, modify, and localize reports with natural language commands.

Key Features

  • "Prompt-to-Report" - Users can create a report layout from a natural language description.
  • Modify Reports - Users can chat with an AI Assistant to adjust a report layout. This functionality is available in applications that target .NET 8 or later.
  • AI-generated Test Data - An AI assistant can generate test data so users can preview reports without connecting to a live data source.
  • Localize Reports - Users can click "Localize with AI" in the Localization Editor to translate all localizable property values into the selected language.
  • "Prompt-to-Expression" - Users can create valid expressions from natural language descriptions.

Examples

  1. In a WinForms application with the ReportDesigner component, install the DevExpress AI Integration package:

    dotnet add package DevExpress.AIIntegration.WinForms.Reporting

  2. Install packages required for your preferred AI service. See supported AI services for additional information.

  3. Register your AI service at application startup:

    using Azure.AI.OpenAI;
    using DevExpress.AIIntegration;
    using Microsoft.Extensions.AI;
    using System.ClientModel;

    internal static class Program {
        static string AzureOpenAIEndpoint { get { return "AZURE_OPENAI_ENDPOINT"; } }
        static string AzureOpenAIKey { get { return "AZURE_OPENAI_APIKEY"; } }
        static string DeploymentName { get { return "MODEL_NAME"; } } // For example, gpt-5.2.
        [STAThread]
        static void Main(){
            IChatClient client = new AzureOpenAIClient(
                new Uri(AzureOpenAIEndpoint),
                new ApiKeyCredential(AzureOpenAIKey))
                    .GetChatClient(DeploymentName).AsIChatClient();
            AIExtensionsContainerDesktop.Default.RegisterChatClient(client);
            ApplicationConfiguration.Initialize();
            Application.Run(new Form1());
        }
    }

  4. Register required extensions (behaviors) and attach them to the WinForms Report Designer control:

    using DevExpress.AIIntegration.WinForms.Reporting;
    // ...
    public partial class Form1 : Form {
        public Form1() {
            InitializeComponent();
            behaviorManager1.Attach<ReportPromptToReportBehavior>(reportDesigner1, behavior => {
            // ...
            });
        }
    }

  5. Call the BehaviorInitializer.Initialize() method at application startup if your project targets the .NET Framework and you create AI-powered behaviors in code.

    internal static class Program {
        [STAThread]
        static void Main() {
            //...
            // The Initialize() method forcibly initializes the behavior manager in .NET Framework apps.
            DevExpress.AIIntegration.WinForms.Reporting.BehaviorInitializer.Initialize();
            Application.Run(new Form1());
        }
    }
