Azure AI Agent Server Invocations library for .NET
Azure.AI.AgentServer.Invocations is a .NET library for building ASP.NET Core servers that implement the Azure AI Invocations protocol. Subclass InvocationHandler, register it with the hosting builder, and the library handles routing, session resolution, client header forwarding, and invocation lifecycle management.

Getting started
Install the package
Install the library for .NET with NuGet:
dotnet add package Azure.AI.AgentServer.Invocations --prerelease
Prerequisites
- An Azure subscription
- .NET 8 or later
- The
Azure.AI.AgentServer.Corepackage (installed automatically as a dependency)
Configure the server
The fastest way to get running:
InvocationsServer.Run<EchoHandler>();
Where EchoHandler implements the Invocations protocol:
public class EchoHandler : InvocationHandler
{
public override async Task HandleAsync(
HttpRequest request, HttpResponse response,
InvocationContext context, CancellationToken cancellationToken)
{
var input = await new StreamReader(request.Body).ReadToEndAsync(cancellationToken);
await response.WriteAsync($"You said: {input}", cancellationToken);
}
}
Alternatively, use AgentHost.CreateBuilder() for more control over service registration and middleware:
var builder = AgentHost.CreateBuilder();
builder.AddInvocations<EchoHandler>();
builder.Build().Run();
For more control over the host (adding services, configuring middleware, composing multiple protocols), see Customizing the host below.
Key concepts
InvocationHandler
The abstract base class you subclass for HTTP-only handlers. Only HandleAsync is abstract β the remaining operations (GetAsync, CancelAsync, GetOpenApiAsync, GetAsyncApiJsonAsync, GetAsyncApiYamlAsync) return 404 by default and can be overridden as needed.
InvocationWebSocketHandler
Derives from InvocationHandler and adds the abstract HandleWebSocketAsync method for the /invocations_ws endpoint. The inherited HandleAsync returns 404 by default, so a WebSocket-only handler does not need to implement HandleAsync β multi-protocol handlers override both. See the WebSocket protocol section below.
InvocationContext
Provides request metadata to the handler. All properties are read-only and resolved before HandleAsync is called.
| Property | Type | Description |
|---|---|---|
InvocationId |
string |
Unique identifier for this invocation. Passed as the first argument to GetAsync and CancelAsync. Use as a key when storing per-invocation state. |
SessionId |
string |
Resolved multi-turn session identifier. For POST /invocations, resolved from the agent_session_id query parameter, FOUNDRY_AGENT_SESSION_ID env var, or a generated UUID β in that order. For GET and Cancel, the query parameter is not used; the value comes from the env var or a generated UUID. |
ClientHeaders |
IReadOnlyDictionary<string, string> |
Forwarded x-client-* headers from the original request β useful for propagating tracing context and client metadata. |
QueryParameters |
IReadOnlyDictionary<string, StringValues> |
All query parameters from the incoming request. Per the invocation protocol spec, all query parameters are forwarded unchanged. |
PlatformContext |
PlatformContext |
Platform context extracted from the x-agent-user-id and x-agent-foundry-call-id headers. Useful for multi-tenant scenarios where per-user data must be partitioned and the per-request call ID forwarded to 1P services. PlatformContext.Empty indicates no platform headers were present. |
Customizing the host
When you need to add services, configure middleware, or compose multiple protocols on a single host, see the hosting tier samples:
InvocationsServerOptions can be configured via the AddInvocationsServer(options => { ... }) delegate on any tier. See the Tier 3 self-hosting sample for a complete example.
Handler lifetime
Handlers registered via AddInvocations<THandler>() or InvocationsServer.Run<THandler>() are resolved per request by default (scoped lifetime). Instance fields on your InvocationHandler subclass will not persist across requests. Store long-lived state in separate services or storage keyed by InvocationContext.SessionId or InvocationContext.InvocationId, or register a singleton handler explicitly if you require a single shared instance.
Serving discovery specs (OpenAPI / AsyncAPI)
The Invocations host exposes three optional discovery endpoints for machine-readable agent contracts. Override the corresponding methods on your InvocationHandler; each returns 404 by default.
| Method | Endpoint | Response media type |
|---|---|---|
GetOpenApiAsync |
GET /invocations/docs/openapi.json |
application/json |
GetAsyncApiJsonAsync |
GET /invocations/docs/asyncapi.json |
application/json |
GetAsyncApiYamlAsync |
GET /invocations/docs/asyncapi.yaml |
application/yaml |
AsyncAPI is the companion to OpenAPI for event-driven / streaming surfaces (e.g. the invocations_ws WebSocket protocol) that OpenAPI cannot express. The path extension is authoritative for the returned content type β there is no Accept negotiation and no format conversion between the JSON and YAML representations. Override GetAsyncApiJsonAsync and GetAsyncApiYamlAsync independently; publishing both is recommended for tooling compatibility.
public override async Task GetAsyncApiJsonAsync(
HttpRequest request, HttpResponse response, CancellationToken cancellationToken)
{
response.StatusCode = 200;
response.ContentType = "application/json";
await response.WriteAsync(_asyncApiJson, cancellationToken);
}
WebSocket protocol (invocations_ws)
The same host that serves POST /invocations also exposes a WebSocket transport at /invocations_ws. Container authors do not install or import a second package β derive from InvocationWebSocketHandler and override HandleWebSocketAsync. The inherited HandleAsync returns 404 by default, so a WebSocket-only agent has no boilerplate; override HandleAsync too when you want HTTP and WebSocket on the same handler.
public class WebSocketEchoHandler : InvocationWebSocketHandler
{
public override async Task HandleWebSocketAsync(
WebSocket webSocket, InvocationContext context, CancellationToken cancellationToken)
{
var buffer = new byte[4096];
while (webSocket.State == WebSocketState.Open && !cancellationToken.IsCancellationRequested)
{
var received = await webSocket.ReceiveAsync(buffer, cancellationToken);
if (received.MessageType == WebSocketMessageType.Close)
{
break;
}
await webSocket.SendAsync(
new ArraySegment<byte>(buffer, 0, received.Count),
received.MessageType,
received.EndOfMessage,
cancellationToken);
}
}
}
What the SDK does for you when the registered handler derives from InvocationWebSocketHandler:
- Registers the
/invocations_wsroute on the same host as/invocationsand/readiness. - Calls
AcceptWebSocketAsyncbefore invoking your handler. - Sends an RFC 6455 protocol-level Ping frame (opcode
0x9) everyWS_KEEPALIVE_INTERVALseconds when the env var is set β Kestrel does this for us viaWebSocketOptions.KeepAliveInterval, so the connection stays alive across upstream proxy / load-balancer idle timeouts without any extra application traffic. Disabled by default. - Closes the connection cleanly on handler return (close code
1000βNormalClosure) or maps an uncaught handler exception to close code1011(InternalServerError). Handler-initiated close codes are preserved unchanged. - Emits a structured close-event log line carrying
session_id,close_code, andduration_ms. Raw WebSocket handlers use the ASP.NET Core request span. The typed Voice relay replaces that generic request telemetry with a semanticagentserver.connectionspan created from the inbound W3C context. - When the registered handler is a plain
InvocationHandler(not anInvocationWebSocketHandler), an upgrade attempt receives HTTP404 Not Foundβ the WS endpoint short-circuits with "endpoint not registered" semantics so a missing handler fails fast instead of accepting and immediately closing.
The session ID honours FOUNDRY_AGENT_SESSION_ID (matching the HTTP POST /invocations precedence, minus the query-param override which has no ergonomic equivalent on a long-lived WS connection), falling back to a generated UUID. Both transports on the same container therefore report the same session ID.
For typed Voice endpoints, the SDK suppresses the generic ASP.NET Core request span and replaces it with semantic Voice spans to avoid duplicate request telemetry. The application's OpenTelemetry configuration controls whether those semantic spans are recorded and exported. When configuring tracing manually, register the Azure.AI.AgentServer.Invocations activity source and configure an appropriate sampler and exporter; the SDK does not override sampling or export decisions for the semantic spans. Register VoiceHandler implementations with AddVoice<THandler>(), not AddInvocations(), because the generic Invocations registration does not install Voice-specific tracing.
Typed Voice relay
VoiceHandler layers immutable Voice Live Bridge Protocol 1.0 messages over the existing /invocations_ws transport. The application explicitly sends readiness, responses, output, completion, control, and error messages.
The typed Voice relay is experimental and may change or be removed. To use any of its APIs, suppress the AAAS001 warning:
#pragma warning disable AAAS001
public class VoiceEchoHandler : VoiceHandler
{
protected override Task OnSessionStartAsync(
VoiceSession session,
VoiceSessionStartEvent start,
CancellationToken cancellationToken) => start.ProtocolVersion == "1.0"
? session.SendAsync(new VoiceSessionReadyMessage(), cancellationToken)
: session.SendAsync(
new VoiceSessionRejectedMessage("protocol_mismatch", retriable: false),
cancellationToken);
protected override async Task OnUserMessageAsync(
VoiceSession session,
VoiceUserMessageEvent message,
CancellationToken cancellationToken)
{
var responseId = VoiceIds.CreateResponseId();
var itemId = VoiceIds.CreateItemId();
var text = string.Concat(message.Content.Select(part => part.Text));
using var turn = session.StartTurn(VoiceTurnOrigin.User, inputCount: 1);
try
{
await session.SendAsync(
new VoiceResponseCreatedMessage(responseId, new[] { message.ItemId }),
cancellationToken);
await session.SendAsync(
new VoiceResponseOutputTextDoneMessage(responseId, itemId, $"You said: {text}"),
cancellationToken);
await session.SendAsync(new VoiceResponseDoneMessage(responseId), cancellationToken);
turn.Complete(new VoiceTurnResult(
VoiceTurnOutcome.Response,
outputItemCount: 1,
responseId));
}
catch (OperationCanceledException exception)
when (exception.CancellationToken == cancellationToken &&
cancellationToken.IsCancellationRequested)
{
turn.Complete(new VoiceTurnResult(VoiceTurnOutcome.Cancelled));
throw;
}
catch
{
turn.Complete(new VoiceTurnResult(VoiceTurnOutcome.Error));
throw;
}
}
}
VoiceServer.Run<VoiceEchoHandler>();
The Voice layer is deliberately a typed event relay:
- It decodes one inbound text frame and dispatches one typed callback.
VoiceSession.SendAsyncencodes one outbound message and serializes concurrent writes.- It retains no pending inputs, response state, message-ID ledger, timers, callback tasks, history, or reconnect state.
- Callbacks are awaited in wire order. Start and track long-running model or tool work in application-owned tasks, then return so later barge-in, timeout, and cancellation events can be dispatched.
OnConnectionTerminatingruns once after the session becomes unwritable and before transport close. Use it only to signal cancellation of application-owned work; do not block or send from it.
See Typed Voice relay for a full sample with application-owned response tasks and cancellation.
WebSocket configuration
| Environment variable | Default | Description |
|---|---|---|
WS_KEEPALIVE_INTERVAL |
unset β disabled | Integer seconds between RFC 6455 Ping frames. 0 (or unset) disables protocol-level keep-alive. |
Examples
You can familiarise yourself with different APIs using Samples.
Multi-user session (per-request call ID)
On container protocol 2.0.0 a single agent session can serve multiple users. Forwarding the per-request x-agent-foundry-call-id on outbound toolbox calls lets the tool server resolve which user made this request and act on their behalf. (x-agent-user-id is never forwarded; the tool resolves the user from the call ID server-side. Use context.PlatformContext.UserIdKey only for the container's own per-user state.)
Register FoundryCallIdHandler on the Foundry HttpClient so the current request's call ID is echoed on every outbound call:
builder.Services.AddAgentServerCore();
// Any HttpClient with FoundryCallIdHandler echoes the CURRENT request's
// x-agent-foundry-call-id β never bake one call's ID into static headers.
builder.Services.AddHttpClient("foundry", c => c.BaseAddress = new Uri(projectEndpoint))
.AddHttpMessageHandler<FoundryCallIdHandler>();
// One agent session can serve many users. Forwarding the per-request call ID on the
// outbound toolbox call lets the tool server resolve which user made this request and
// act on their behalf. x-agent-user-id is never forwarded; use
// context.PlatformContext.UserIdKey only for the container's own per-user state.
public class MultiUserHandler : InvocationHandler
{
private readonly IHttpClientFactory _httpClientFactory;
public MultiUserHandler(IHttpClientFactory httpClientFactory) =>
_httpClientFactory = httpClientFactory;
public override async Task HandleAsync(
HttpRequest request, HttpResponse response,
InvocationContext context, CancellationToken cancellationToken)
{
_ = context.PlatformContext.UserIdKey; // container's own per-user state
// The "foundry" client (registered with FoundryCallIdHandler) echoes this
// request's x-agent-foundry-call-id, so the toolbox acts for THIS user.
var foundry = _httpClientFactory.CreateClient("foundry");
using var toolResponse = await foundry.PostAsJsonAsync(
"/toolboxes/github/mcp",
new
{
jsonrpc = "2.0",
method = "tools/call",
@params = new { name = "list_my_assigned_issues", arguments = new { } },
},
cancellationToken);
await response.WriteAsync(
await toolResponse.Content.ReadAsStringAsync(cancellationToken), cancellationToken);
}
}
Troubleshooting
Common errors
- 404 on invocation endpoint: Ensure your handler is registered via
AddInvocations<THandler>()on the builder. If you registered onIServiceCollectiondirectly without mapping endpoints, the routes will not be created. - Handler not found: The Invocations protocol requires
Azure.AI.AgentServer.Corefor the underlying host. If you see startup errors, verify that you are usingAgentHost.CreateBuilder()orInvocationsServer.Run<THandler>().
Logging
The library emits OpenTelemetry traces via the Azure.AI.AgentServer.Invocations activity source. Enable ASP.NET Core logging in your application configuration to diagnose request routing issues.
